What are the characteristics of silicone foam?

With the release of a series of documents such as the “Notice on Adjusting the Financial Subsidy Policy for the Promotion and Application of New Energy Vehicles” (Caijian [2016] No. 958), the “Notice on Further Improving the Supervision of the Promotion and Application of New Energy Vehicles” (MIIT Zhuang [2016] No. 377), and the “Safety Technical Conditions for Electric Vehicles”, the level of pure electric vehicle power battery system packs has been significantly improved. Especially in terms of energy density, safety protection level, and IP protection level of power battery packs, there have been significant improvements.

Silicone foam has excellent characteristics of compression resistance, aging resistance, flame retardancy and fire resistance, and extreme temperature resistance. It can provide continuous and stable compression resilience for battery pack sealing. Long term use meets the sealing requirements of IP67 or above, and it is the first choice of high-end sealing materials for battery packs.

The application of foam in the middle of soft pack battery cells is very important, manifested in the following four aspects:

1、Foam has low hardness and high rebound properties, which can absorb the swelling stress of batteries and act as a buffer;

2、When the battery cell experiences thermal runaway, foam can provide insulation, suppress heat diffusion, and delay the occurrence of accidents;

3、When a battery cell catches fire, the flame retardant effect of foam can delay the spread of the fire and increase the escape time;

4、Foam has excellent resilience and a wide compression ratio, making it suitable for positioning.
